📍 Location and Structure
The Poseidon Altar is located at the westernmost tip of the Tekağaç Peninsula in Didim, on Tekağaç Cape. This area, overlooking the sea, served as a place of worship dedicated to the sea god Poseidon in ancient times. The altar was built on an east-west axis, measuring 20 meters in length and 11 meters in width. Today, only the base of the structure is clearly visible.
🏛️ Historical and Mythological Context
According to ancient sources, the Poseidon Altar was constructed to mark the southern boundary of the ancient city of Miletus. In the writings of Strabo, the altar is mentioned as a significant point forming the border between Ionia and Caria. Built between 550 and 525 BCE, the altar was used during the Archaic period as one of Miletus’ rural sanctuaries.
🌿 Current Status
Today, the area where the Poseidon Altar is located lies within a military zone and may be closed to visitors. However, the surrounding natural beauty and sea views make it an attractive spot for photographers and nature enthusiasts. It is possible to reach the area from the nearby Altınkum Beach.

The Poseidon Altar is located approximately 7 kilometers from Didim town center. Reaching the site by private vehicle is the easiest option. However, since the area is within a military zone, it's important to check in advance whether access permission is required. Visitors are advised to be environmentally conscious to help preserve the natural landscape of the site.
