Hisarbey Kilise Camii is a historic building located in the Hisar neighborhood of Didim district. Originally built as an Orthodox church by the Greek community in the 1830s, the structure was converted into a mosque following the population exchange in 1924. Therefore, it has served both as a church and a mosque, acting as a cultural bridge between two faiths.
🏛️ Architectural Features
- Layout: The building has a three-nave plan, consisting of one main nave and two side naves.
- Apse: During renovations in the 1980s, the apse was demolished and made flat.
- Materials and Construction: The exterior walls are made of layered rubble stone masonry, while the interior is covered with traditional Turkish tile roofing. The interior walls are coated with cement plaster.
🔨 Restoration and Current Status
Restoration work was initiated in 2020 by the General Directorate of Foundations and completed in a way that respects the building’s original form. The restoration included repairs and renewal of interior and exterior walls, ceilings, columns, windows, and doors. Additionally, a mihrab (prayer niche), minbar (pulpit), and a lectern were added for mosque use. The floor was raised 46 cm above the original level and covered with wooden flooring and carpet. These works were completed by the end of 2020, and the mosque was reopened for worship.
